I first started experimenting with sound as a six year old playing in the grain silos on my parents farm & I've been fascinated by sound ever since. Substation is my sound design studio based in Miramar, Wellington, New Zealand; directly across the road from Park Road Post, Peter Jackson's state of the art film post facility, which is where the film projects we work on are mixed.
My name is Tim Prebble - I am a film sound designer & supervising sound editor. My feature film credits are listed at IMDB as well as below or if you'd prefer download a PDF copy here.
I am passionate about what I do; sound design is my calling, my vocation & I consider it an art; it is my life’s work. I don't judge projects by budget, but I consciously gravitate towards projects where sound can play an active role in story telling. Accordingly my work ranges from large scale VFX-heavy studio films through to local independent feature films, documentaries & short films, and I take equal pride in all of my work. If I can be of help with your project, please call or contact me via email.

SOUND DESIGN:
I see sound design as more than just creating unique sounds; it requires constant communication with all of the contributors to the soundtrack, so that we arrive at the final mix with a highly evolved, coherent jigsaw of elements, following the director's vision yet in a form where any scene or moment can be reconstituted in whatever form best serves the moment.
My modus operandi is based on collaboration: with the director, the producer, the editor, composer, VFX department, the sound editorial & foley team & the mixers.

SOUND EFFECTS & AMBIENCES:
I prefer to record & create unique sounds for each film – to find the films voice. I love reading scripts & once onboard enjoy the process of constantly providing temp mixes of scenes as it allows a progression to occur based on actual results. In New Zealand we are also blessed with a very small population, which equates to quiet backgrounds for recording project-specific sound effects & ambiences. This natural resource combined with my own 2TB library & an open (but experienced) mind is what allows me to do my best work.

MUSIC:
I spend a lot of my spare time working on music & I love collaborating with composers & music editors. Whether it is pitching sound effects to be in tune with music, or developing evocative tones to help blend ambiences & effects with the score, treating sound as music is rich territory to explore.
